Choosing a Water Meter

Water meters measure consumption for billing, conservation, and system monitoring. The appropriate meter depends on pipe size, expected flow range, water quality, installation conditions, reading method, and local utility requirements.

Common Meter Types

  • Positive-displacement meters: Commonly used for residential and other low-flow applications.
  • Multi-jet and single-jet meters: Suitable for many small commercial and residential installations.
  • Turbine meters: Designed for larger services with steady or high flow rates.
  • Compound meters: Measure systems that experience both low and high demand.
  • Ultrasonic and electromagnetic meters: Use electronic sensing with no or few moving parts, depending on the design.

Information Needed Before Purchase

  • Nominal pipe and service-connection size
  • Minimum, normal, and maximum anticipated flow
  • Required measurement units and register resolution
  • Cold-water or hot-water service
  • Indoor, outdoor, pit, or vault installation
  • Connection type, laying length, and available clearance
  • Manual, touch, drive-by, or fixed-network reading
  • Applicable utility specifications, certifications, and accuracy standards

Confirm these requirements with the responsible water utility or project engineer before ordering. A meter that fits the pipe may still be unsuitable if its flow range, communication protocol, or installation dimensions differ from project requirements.

Remote Reading and System Compatibility

Modern metering projects may use automated meter reading or advanced metering infrastructure. Compatibility should be verified across the meter register, encoder, radio endpoint, data-collection network, and billing software. Ask whether equipment uses an open protocol or requires components from a particular system.

Requesting a Quote

A useful quote request should include quantities, meter sizes, required accessories, connection details, reading technology, delivery destination, and requested schedule. Also identify whether calibration records, test certificates, warranties, spare parts, installation kits, or commissioning support are required.

Installation and Maintenance

Installation should follow the meter manufacturer’s instructions and applicable utility standards. Important considerations include flow direction, required straight-pipe length, strainer placement, electrical grounding, protection from freezing or flooding, and accessibility for reading and replacement.

Ongoing meter programs commonly include inspection, accuracy testing, leak review, battery or endpoint management, and planned replacement based on condition, performance, and utility policy.
