How a Book Exchange Works

A book exchange gives readers a way to pass along books they have finished and discover pre-owned titles from other readers. Depending on the exchange, participants may swap books directly, receive store credit, or borrow titles under a return-based system.

Before You Exchange a Book

• Remove personal notes, receipts, and bookmarks.
• Disclose writing, highlighting, water damage, odors, or loose pages.
• Confirm which genres, editions, and formats are accepted.
• Ask how trade values, credits, or borrowing periods are determined.

Availability, exchange policies, prices, operating hours, and contact details can change. Confirm current information directly with the relevant organizer or bookseller before visiting or sending books.

Responsible Exchanging

Pack books carefully when mailing them and describe their condition accurately. For local exchanges, choose a safe public meeting place. Books that are unsuitable for exchange may still be appropriate for donation or responsible paper recycling.
